It’s a complete turn-around for Renault: after having used the V10 engine with the widest angle on the grid since 2001, the French constructor will be using the narrowest V10 angle in 2004. The reason for this is a lack of time to design a decent 90° engine.
When Renault made the decision to do away with their 111° engine, they then had to decide what to replace it with. To design a ‘traditional’ 90° V10 engine, like those of Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, Honda and Cosworth, would have taken at least 18 months of research.
It will be a Supertec design, a Renault client engine used notably by Arrows in 2000, which will be the basis for the 2004 car. It should benefit from all the innovations of the RS23 used this season, but will not be any wider than 72°.
This engine strategy therefore goes against all the justifications that Renault have put forward in the last three years, which will take some explaining.
